Harry woke up at 5:30 the next morning and made his way downstairs to the kitchen. Mr. and Mrs. Weasley, Sirius, Lupin, and Tonks were all waiting for him. As Harry started eating his breakfast, Mr. Weasley informed him of the details of his hearing. "The hearing's on my floor, in Amelia Bones's office. She's Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and the one who'll be questioning you."
"Don't lose your temper. Be polite and stick to the facts," Sirius chimed in.
They all wished him luck as he followed Mr. Weasley out the door. After a short walk they arrived at an old telephone booth on the corner of two streets. They crammed inside and Mr. Weasley picked up the receiver. The floor lowered like an elevator. After a few moments of pitch darkness, Harry was greeted by the sight of an enormous underground domed structure with people bustling about in every direction. Harry followed Mr. Weasley out of the telephone booth and past an enormous fountain.
When they arrived at Amelia Bones' office it was empty. After a few minutes one of Arthur Weasley's colleagues ran in panting. "The Potter boy's hearing has been changed to 8:00 in Courtroom Ten." Mr. Weasley glanced at his watch. It was already 8:15. He hurried Harry out of the room and to the elevators to take them downstairs. When the elevator grate slammed, Mr. Weasley growled angrily that the courtrooms hadn't been used in years.
Finally, they reached Courtroom Ten. Mr. Weasley wished Harry luck at the door and told him that he was not allowed inside with him. Harry nodded and slowly turned toward the heavy iron door. He grabbed the handle and pushed the door open and stepped into the courtroom.
Harry immediately recognized Courtroom Ten. This is the room he had seen in the Pensieve last year where the Lestranges were sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban. The room was filled with about 50 witches and wizards, some donning long black robes and hats and others wearing maroon. It dawned on Harry that we was now standing in front of the entire Wizengamot. In the center of the crowd sat Cornelius Fudge. Percy Weasley sat immediately to his left and was scribbling profusely on his parchment. Harry was directed into the center of the tall circular courtroom and sat down in the lone chair facing the wizard council.
Cornelius Fudge stood up and waled over to the podium directly in front of Harry's chair. He unrolled a piece of parchment and began listing off Harry's interrogators. A few names in Fudge was interrupted by a loud crash behind Harry. The courtroom door had swung open and a tall wizard entered the room.
"Witness for the defense, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore!"
Harry smiled slightly as he glanced at Fudge. He was clearly surprised to see Dumbledore.
"I see that you received our owl about the time and location changes for the hearing then?" Fudge said to Dumbledore.
"As it happens, I hadn't. But due to a lucky mistake I arrived at the ministry three hours early, so no harm done," Dumbledore replied curtly.
"Charges?" Dumbledore asked.
"The defendant knowingly produced a Patronus Charm in a muggle-inhabited area, in the presence of a muggle." The severe-looking witch next to Fudge actually seemed impressed that a 15-year old wizard could produce a full bodied Patronus.
Harry spoke up and told Fudge that he only cast the spell because he saw Dementors. The Wizengamot sat in silence. Amelia Bones (the severe looking witch) sat forward. "Dementors? In Little Whinging? What do you mean boy?"
Fudge immediately started smirking. "Let me explain. He's been thinking it through and decided Dementors would make a very nice little cover story, very nice indeed. Muggles can't see Dementors, can they, boy? Highly convenient, highly convenient."
"I'm not lying," Harry said.
Dumbledore looked directly at Fudge and offered that there was a witness. Dumbledore opened the courtroom door and waved Mrs. Figg into the room. She told the Wizengamot that she was a Squib but that she could still see the Dementors even though she wasn't a witch. She poorly described what the dementors looked like and Harry's hope was sinking. But then she began describing the feeling that the Dementors produced:
"Everything went cold, and this was a very warm summer's night, mark you. And I felt.. as though all happiness had gone from the world.. and i remembered.. dreadful things.." She then went on to describe how the Dementors had attacked Harry and his cousin.
Fudge shook his head and waved off her testimony. but Madam Bones spoke up: "She certainly described the effects of a Dementor attack very accurately. And I can't imagine why she would say they were there if they weren't." Fudge couldn't believe that a pair of Dementors would make it to a muggle suburb.
"I don't believe it was a coincidence at all," Dumbledore said. "The dementors were ordered there by someone."
A witch sitting directly behind Fudge giggled. Harry noticed her for the first time. She looked like a large pale toad. "Excuse me Dumbledore. It sounded for a teensy moment as though you were suggesting that the Ministry of Magic had ordered an attack on this boy!"
Dumbledore agreed that it was only logical that either the Dementors were outside Ministry control, or that somebody at the Ministry might have ordered the attacks. Fudge looked enraged at both suggestions. Dumbledore went on to argue that Harry had the right to defend himself even if he is underage, so the Patronus he cast was justified.
Finally Madam Bones spoke again: "All those in favor of a conviction?"
Fudge, the toad-like woman, and a handful or other witches and wizards raised their hands.
"And all those in favor of clearing the accused of all charges?"
Madam Bones and the other two-thirds of the Wizengamot raised their hands. Fudge picked up his gavel and slammed it down on the top of the podium. "Very well, very well.. cleared of all charges."
Harry smiled and stood up to speak to Dumbledore. Dumbledore quickly turned away without looking at him and left the courtroom.
