  1. One opinion poll in 2 years gave yes a lead. 1. The SNP seemed to take that as a guarantee of victory however.
  2. The Sussex Independence Campaign is gaining strength I hear On another note, whilst we are on the subject of bits of the country we want to lose, we really need to do something about Peterborough.
  3. Its going to be No. BBC national prediction is 55% NO, 45% YES. A bigger no Lead than was predicted by the eve of election polls.
  4. I have a percuniary interest (ie I bet my boss a pint of beer they would vote no) to declare. However I do not think Scotland would be benefited by leaving the Union. And I have been disappointed in the debate so far. Its been good that the participation rate has been so high, but for the most part the campaigns have been weak. Alexander Salmond is not a man with a plan. He wants to build a new country in 18 months and has no idea how to do it, and has been constantly vague on what it would look like. Alistair Darling, leader of Better together has zoomed in on this and criticised him for it. But at the heart of the campaign there has been a total failure to really talk about what this is. There is a lot of talk about next year, or the year after. But this is not about that. This is about 50 years, 100 years, 300 years. What happens tonight will be felt for literally hundreds of years. For a person living in the UK it is likely to be the most significant political event of our lifetimes. Because whatever happens the UK is going to change dramatically over the next 2 years. But that hasn't been talked about. There has been precious little talk about identity...do Scottish people want to stop being British? Do they want to become foreign citizens in London? Do they want English men and women working in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen immigrants? Do they want to make their fellow Scots in London, Manchester, Birmingham ex-pats? Fundamentally, do they want a different country? That question has not really been expressed and discussed and has been lost over issues such as currency and EU Membership. Which whilst they are important issues about how Scotland would look, I do not feel they reach the heart of the issue.
  5. If you hated the job then the reason they fired you is probably more to do with the fact they knew you didn't want to work there and the official reason is more of an excuse. Typically managers will work on the basis that employing someone who does not want to work for you is doing neither side a favor. I would also tend to not protest too much about it. Your manager can probably cover themselves well enough and even if you were to win a case, "I openly bitched about my boss and company on facebook, got fired for it and then sued the company" will probably hurt your employment prospects more than any settlement you would get. It will spell "trouble" out above your head far more than just getting on with life. I get the living in fear of expressing yourself and how that must be very frustrating. I go through the same thing because if I criticise my organisation I run into the problem that I am making political statements from the position of being a government employee. Whilst my job is sufficiently low grade that I am not barred from political activity it would certainly hurt my advancement. But the bottom line is that employers do not exist for the benefit of their employees. The "system" is good at protecting itself and that is one of the ways it does.
  6. Own time or not, it is still a very risky action. Imagine you are down the pub with your work mates, and you start bitching about the boss in a very loud voice. Would you expect there to be no consequences? Facebook is essentially the same situation as that. This is why I never bitch about my job in writing. I don't know the law were you work but for the UK it is possible for a company to sack you for this-essentially you can have an obligation to maintain the image of the company. However there would be a requirement that this had been made known to you. You would also be protected in the UK if you had in the past made a complaint regarding health and safety for the same issue (because then the sacking looks like protecting unsafe behaviour). But if you have not previously taken action against unsafe practices (reporting them etc) then your case would be fairly weak.
  7. Just because you don't look doesn't mean bad things aren't happening. These things happen because there is a market for them. If no one looked at the pictures people wouldn't leak them because they wouldn't get the attention they are getting a kick out of. So by not looking I reduce the demand and contribute in a very small way to preventing future wrongs.
  8. Haven't looked because I happen to believe people have a right not to be exposed in this way.

  17. How on earth is there an EU country which manages to have open sex discrimination in is job vacancies? I though successive Directives and the Court of Justice had stamped hard on that kind of thing? Or is there some kind of occupational requirement for that position? How much do you find that interview techniques and application styles vary between people of different nationalities? In a programme I am involved in we are finding that there can be staggering differences as we are looking for candidates drawn from across the EU. Final question, as a person whose manager is leaning on them to start thinking about longer term career advancement (basically saying-18 months to get yourself promotion or you are not moving forward fast enough), can you advise me as to the traits you expect a middle manager to have in comparison to someone who is fairly high grade but not acting in a management position? In my case I currently earn substantially more than many team leaders due to the technical and demanding nature of my job, but any advancement will likely require moving into management.
  18. Not well currently.
  19. Have to shake my head at Force India-not cool to let a driver keep racing with failing brakes. Oversteer at that speed is stupidly dangerous.
  20. Essentially the Catholic church does not marry non-Catholics in their churches. How committed you need to be will depend on the priest. They also take the vow before God part seriously, so effectively they e,left a period of support and testing to ensure you can keep the vow and fully understand what that entails.
  21. If someone is drinking themselves into a whole the you need to stop helping them. Offer advice and offer support when they change, but do not protect them from their actions. By doing so all you do is enable them to keep living the same way.
  22. Very much a lapsed one since the gay marriage debate but can understand a lot of their viewpoints.
