The Happening.... *not* crap M. Night Shyamalan version

Scenario:

The once quiet town of Samwise Gamgee has been having some trouble recently: movie attendance is down, happiness seems at an all time low, and no-one is buying Valentine's cards! One resident - Donald Sutherland, a Canadian character actor with a film career spanning over 50 years - seems to remember a movie he once starred in that had a similar plot. He announces to the town there can only be ONE cause: people are being replaced by replicas grown from plantlike pods! He calls his out-of-town friend (and co-star in the 1978 movie), Leonard Nimoy, who reminds him how the movie had a totally crap ending for Humanity, and persuades Sutherland to run away with him. Together they will find William Shatner's truck bed camper (which he still lives in) and attempt to turn it into an inter-stellar ship.

Meanwhile, the nice townfolk stare at each other in confusion. What should decent, smart people do? MOVE, of course. What are YOU gonna do? Try to figure out who the pod guys are and lynch 'em during the daylight! I'm not kidding, folks. That's the plan, unless you want to "make like Sutherland" or "pull a Nimroy." Which would be totally lame, and your future children would disown you.

So there is good news and bad news. The bad news is, the pod people move at night - and might switcheroo OR kill one of the townsfolk (never both). The good news is, due to their desire to blend in, they will never switcheroo to a equal number or majority. If there are 3 townsfolk and 1 pod person, the next morning there will still be 3 townsfolk (if noone was murdered). If pod people outnumber or equal the Innocents during the day, the pods win, if the Innocents wipe out the pod people, Donald Sutherland can come home.

Rules:
[01] Votes should be in bold. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted, unless you're clever and add it to the spreadsheet also. Failsafe system!
[02] Please put some effort into making posts longer than 1 or 2 sentences. I can't force you to do it, but it would be helpful.
[03] Lynching will require a simple majority of votes. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, their pleas are useless and any attempts to unvote will be unheeded. The exception to this rule is if the deadline is reached, and no majority has been achieved - see below *
[04] You may vote: no lynch. Majority votes of this kind are necessary to end the day without a death.
[05] Once your death scene has been posted, you’re dead. You can make a single “Bah!” post but no relevant information.
[06] No small text. Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts either.
[07] Don’t quote any PMs from me. If you do, I will destroy you.
[08] If you have a night choice to make, it is due by the posted deadline. I will not wait for you. If you do not submit a choice to me, I’ll flip a coin or get creative, depending on how much I've had to drink.
[09] If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 24-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.
[10] If you have any questions at all, please PM me or post the question in the thread.
[11] Remember, it’s a game and it’s supposed to be fun. Be nice to your fellow players.

*"What happens if the deadline is reached, and there is no 'majority'?" This is most likely to happen if either (1) some people are inactive, or don't vote or (2) the spread of votes is evenly distributed. In scenario 1, all those unvoting members at the deadline become "abstaining" and lose their vote that round, and in the case of (2) whoever has the oldest vote of lynch gets it. Believe it or not, this is to HELP the townies, trust me.

Vote for a player to be lynched by posting and using the NIFTY SPREADSHEET BELOW. The spreadsheet shows you (at any moment) how things stand, the posting is so historically people can look back and decide how evil or decent you are. Yes, we can also post votecounts, but the spreadsheet is the best way to make sure I don't miss something or screw up. If there are 2 players with the same amount of votes at deadline, then I will lynch the one who reached that number of votes first.

Players:

1/ ScoutX
2/ Falzis
3/ Aquinas
4/ CanucksDynasty
5/ KevinH
6/ Electric Mango
7/ Narsis
8/ Tobias Greene

Finally....

THE NIFTY SPREADSHEET OF AWESOMENESS

The above link is to a spreadsheet which lists everyone still alive, and a column for each player. This is to save me the endless back and forth that I've seen here. Open the sheet, find the column at the top with your name, and then place an X in that column under who you want killed (list of candidates is on the left).

YOU SHOULD ALL HAVE PMs SITTING IN YOUR INBOX WITH CHARACTERS. LET ME KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY SNAGS.

With the absence of Donald slowly spreading through the town's collective conscience, the people of Samwise Gamgee decide to get together and call a meeting. In the vast and echoing collective common room of City Hall (it's not really that vast, but when only 8 people show to your meeting, it seems it) the townies eye each other suspiciously. There have been no murders, no real reason to suspect anything is going on - but Donald said there was, and Donald (in these parts) is the closest thing to "the man" anyone has seen in a century. Well, 96 years - back in 1914 a cowboy by the name of Bill Hicks terrorized the ladies for many years. His reign ended when the men, mad their wives were being shagged rotten by a dirty scoundrel, invited him over for a game of cards, and poisoned him. He was such THE MAN that they then had to shoot him a few times, and then drown in the lake. Donald, knowing this, wisely does not accept invitations to people's houses to play cards.

In any case, the townies survey each other, and as one begins to speak, accusations begin to fly.

DAY 1 COMMENCES
If we don't have a majority vote (which starts the lynch), deadline is MIDNIGHT SUNDAY 1/24 your time.

Did you really mean January 24 for the deadline?

I like to play fast, so I'm up for it ... especially on day 1.

So let's get started:

Vote: No Lynch

It's a day start and "nobody knows nothin'".

Convince me otherwise!

By my math, Sunday is January 24th - which is the deadline of day 1. We then switch to night, which will most likely last 24 hours or less (the Cylons and power players on the last round were very responsive, so good times). Ergo, if all goes well, expect day 2 to start around Tuesday of next week.

It is pretty early to be throwing a lynch around. Unless I see some evidence or someone can sway me otherwise...

sigh. Tobias i know you are new so for your sake(and only for your sake) will i say this:

no lynching is bad for the town on day 1.

why?

because it gives up the fundamental reason for a Day start as opposed to a night start: the extra chance to take out scum. by no lynching day 1, we are essentially starting the game at night 0, the only difference being a slightly increased amount of knowledge from Day 1 play(and it will be slight since we went for no lynch). in fact, the sooner we no lynch the worse off we are when it comes to information.

anyway i would prefer to avoid the lynch/no lynch debate as much as possible since it doesnt provide much real information and takes away from scumhunting. and in a game with days as short as they are...we need every minute scum hunting that we can get.

Or is it that you have been a townie for the last two games and there's no way that you're a townie again. tongue.gif

Don't worry, I'll change my vote Kevin, I just couldn't help but to vote for you. I'd hate to break tradition. Also congrats, you have a no lynch disciple now, much to Narsis' chagrin.

I'm with Narsis. A no lynch can only help the scum. It lets them kill one more of us before we get a chance to kill one of them. We won't know anything more after one of us is dead. I'm voting KevinH because he suggested it.

Hahaha this is a good one! The Happening ROFL!

To get away from the lynch or no lynch debate, let's speculate on the set up. To the veterans, would this be like some sort of Cult set up? From the first post I'm thinking pod people can possess people??

How many times have I said "I told you so"?

With a quick deadline coming up, I think it would be easiest for scum to lay low and not draw attention to themselves. My suspicions tomorrow will be on those that aren't active today (tomorrow game-wise).

the sentence i quoted would seem to suggest that yes. although i'm not quite sure how a cult would be set up in a game of this size. never played one this small with a cult(actually i dont think i've ever played any with a cult before).

8 players...so it's probably 2 mafia.

Worst case scenario...
D1 - mislynch
N1 - night kill
D2 - left with 4 townies and 2 mafia.
D2- mislynch
N2 - night kill = 2 townies and 2 mafia = game over.

No lynch scenario
D1 - no lynch
N1 - night kill
D2 - left with 5 townies and 2 mafia.
D2 - mislynch
N2 - night kill
D3 - left with 3 townies and 2 mafia.
D3 - mislynch = 2 townies and 2 mafia = game over

In both cases...we only have one mislynch to give.
Also...a majority vote is needed for a lynch (no half majority to lynch listed in the rules).

I've spent a large amount of time running numbers on the possible outcomes, so if this turns into a complete mess I have no-one to blame but myself. However - to clarify:

Basically, instead of scum in this game you have the Pod people (duh). This group of people possess one power only - collectively at night they can choose to kill OR convert a townie. If you all wake up tomorrow and one of the townies is dead, there was no conversion. Wake up, and you all are still alive, one more of you may now be a Pod - or there may have been no action taken that night. This is a modification of the Werewolf role, as the Werewolf setup (in my mind) was thoroughly complicated with "resurrections" and "killing people multiple times" which seemed a little retarded.

As per the opening post, Pod people cannot gain a 50% or greater percentage via conversion - so there will be blood, even if the townies refuse repeatedly to lynch.

Hope that clears things up, you know where I am if you have questions.

Edit: Also, to clear something else up I noticed in the last thread. "What happens if the deadline is reached, and there is no 'majority'?" This is most likely to happen if either (1) some people are inactive, or don't vote or (2) the spread of votes is evenly distributed. In scenario 1, all those unvoting members at the deadline become "abstaining" and lose their vote that round, and in the case of (2) whoever has the oldest vote of lynch gets it. Using right now as an example (pretending this moment was day 1 deadline) we would have 5 voting members and 3 abstaining. KevinH's first vote would mean we currently have a no-lynch occur, if he changed it to anything else his head would be in the noose.

PM me with questions, or post here.
