It's Happening.... Again

The Happening.... *not* crap M. Night Shyamalan version

Scenario:

The once quiet town of Samwise Gamgee has been having some trouble recently: movie attendance is down, happiness seems at an all time low, and no-one is buying Valentine's cards! One resident - Donald Sutherland, a Canadian character actor with a film career spanning over 50 years - seems to remember a movie he once starred in that had a similar plot. He announces to the town there can only be ONE cause: people are being replaced by replicas grown from plantlike pods! He calls his out-of-town friend (and co-star in the 1978 movie), Leonard Nimoy, who reminds him how the movie had a totally crap ending for Humanity, and persuades Sutherland to run away with him. Together they will find William Shatner's truck bed camper (which he still lives in) and attempt to turn it into an inter-stellar ship.

Meanwhile, the nice townfolk stare at each other in confusion. What should decent, smart people do? MOVE, of course. What are YOU gonna do? Try to figure out who the pod guys are and lynch 'em during the daylight! I'm not kidding, folks. That's the plan, unless you want to "make like Sutherland" or "pull a Nimroy." Which would be totally lame, and your future children would disown you.

So there is good news and bad news. The bad news is, the pod people move at night - and might switcheroo OR kill one of the townsfolk (never both). The good news is, due to their desire to blend in, they will never switcheroo to a equal number or majority. If there are 3 townsfolk and 1 pod person, the next morning there will still be 3 townsfolk (if noone was murdered). If pod people outnumber or equal the Innocents during the day, the pods win, if the Innocents wipe out the pod people, Donald Sutherland can come home.

Rules:

[01] Votes should be in bold. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted, unless you're clever and add it to the spreadsheet also. Failsafe system!

[02] Please put some effort into making posts longer than 1 or 2 sentences. I can't force you to do it, but it would be helpful.

[03] Lynching will require a simple majority of votes. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, their pleas are useless and any attempts to unvote will be unheeded. The exception to this rule is if the deadline is reached, and no majority has been achieved - see below *

[04] You may vote: no lynch. Majority votes of this kind are necessary to end the day without a death.

[05] Once your death scene has been posted, you’re dead. You can make a single “Bah!” post but no relevant information.

[06] No small text. Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts either.

[07] Don’t quote any PMs from me. If you do, I will destroy you.

[08] If you have a night choice to make, it is due by the posted deadline. I will not wait for you. If you do not submit a choice to me, I’ll flip a coin or get creative, depending on how much I've had to drink.

[09] If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 24-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.

[10] If you have any questions at all, please PM me or post the question in the thread.

[11] Remember, it’s a game and it’s supposed to be fun. Be nice to your fellow players.

*"What happens if the deadline is reached, and there is no 'majority'?" This is most likely to happen if either (1) some people are inactive, or don't vote or (2) the spread of votes is evenly distributed. In scenario 1, all those unvoting members at the deadline become "abstaining" and lose their vote that round, and in the case of (2) whoever has the oldest vote of lynch gets it. Believe it or not, this is to HELP the townies, trust me.

Vote for a player to be lynched by posting and using the NIFTY SPREADSHEET BELOW. The spreadsheet shows you (at any moment) how things stand, the posting is so historically people can look back and decide how evil or decent you are. Yes, we can also post votecounts, but the spreadsheet is the best way to make sure I don't miss something or screw up. If there are 2 players with the same amount of votes at deadline, then I will lynch the one who reached that number of votes first.

Players:

1/ ScoutX

2/ Falzis

3/ Aquinas

4/ CanucksDynasty

5/ KevinH

6/ Electric Mango

7/ Narsis

8/ Tobias Greene

Finally....

THE NIFTY SPREADSHEET OF AWESOMENESS

The above link is to a spreadsheet which lists everyone still alive, and a column for each player. This is to save me the endless back and forth that I've seen here. Open the sheet, find the column at the top with your name, and then place an X in that column under who you want killed (list of candidates is on the left).

YOU SHOULD ALL HAVE PMs SITTING IN YOUR INBOX WITH CHARACTERS. LET ME KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY SNAGS.

to make it two-way and give Aquinas or Tobias the final decision who gets lynched (4th vote is not hammer but the first to get it will be lynched if there is a tie).

@Narsis

How did you arrive at that math?

I'm not going to vote for either candidate at this point actually. I do not at all advocate the no lynch strategy but, I do not advocate voting for either of the candidates on the chopping block. I am not going to vote for KevinH because of his no lynch suggestion. It happens every game and it does not demonstrate to me that he is either more or less scummy. Furthermore, Tobias Greene's inactivity is not suspect to me at this time either. This game is little more than a day old. People get busy and its not a scum tell in my mind that he's scum for not posting. Especially if he is absent when he is this close to a lynch. A scum might avoid conversation but, there is no reason not to defend oneself in this situation. When the only evidence against you it shouldn't be to hard to get rid of the burden by getting on and posting. Therefore, finding both parties to be inappropriate lynch targets...

Vote: Falzis

Falzis wanted me to vote for one of two candidates:

Vote: Tobias Greene

to make it two-way and give Aquinas or Tobias the final decision who gets lynched (4th vote is not hammer but the first to get it will be lynched if there is a tie).

This first of all is a false ultimatum. You've asked me to do something where there is plenty more than two options but only offered two. Both the people you have implied for me to vote for I do not find to be likely scum. You have suggested that I vote to lynch one of two likely townie players at random possibly to avoid drawing suspicion to yourself or to be able to start hunting me down next with a pretty solid base on day two. I'm not saying that is certainly the case but, I find it more likely than either of the others being scum.

@MOD: I think we're having some spreadsheet coordination issues, could you attempt to get on it and fix some of the wrong inputs. I'd do it myself but, as a player I think that might be inappropriate.

Reason: Aquinas said it well and I'm pulling my vote on Tobias to make it a 3 horse race. My vote on Tobias was solely due to his inactivity, my vote for Falzis makes better sense.

Wokieeee I didn't honestly expect to get heat for that vote nor comment. It wasn't really an ultimatum so much as an option.

Unvote: KevinH

as promised.

as for how i got the numbers...have you heard of probability trees? that's what i used. basically: you start with two branches coming off of a point, each branch corresponding to a different probability(so the probability of lynching town on one and the probability of lynching mafia on the other). repeat this for each day with the new probabilities based off of which branch you went down creating a new branch for each probability.

I am going through vote by vote to make sure the spreadsheet is correct. I am less active on weekends (as at work I am paid to "surf") but I shall be monitoring.

Edit: The good news is, everyone apart from Narsis has made a vote (as he retracted). The bad news is, I see no majority.... So day 1 drags on

Check the spreadsheet, ask the people you feel should live (or die) some questions, and have at ye! Every person has a part to play, should they choose to play it or not could mean staying on... or straying off the reservation.

Anyway, good luck to all.

Huh? Guys I'm not the pod person. I don't know how to convince you but I'm not. May Heaven's wrath will fall upon the Pod person. Confess your sins now to me!

I'll back off for now. For it is not my place to convict the holy.

I'm updating the spreadsheet now, however:

1/ It was supposed to be a self-maintained entity people would update themselves, making sure I didn't goof when making crucial decisions. Ergo, how can a fail-safe system work when the guy who tally's the votes also updates the sheet? That's what I call "pulling an Enron."

2/ There is a difference between 'updating' and 'screwing with' - if person A notices person B's vote isn't listed, person A can add it. I will check the forum anyway before making the judgment call (hence the words 'fail-safe system'). We're all adults here. Well, apart from ScoutX, who is a 12 year old from Kentucky who has a crush on Shania Twain.

3/ Thank you all for playing.

Aquinas made sense in his reasoning, and the "Guys I'm not the pod person. I don't know how to convince you but I'm not." post makes me more suspicious.

Deadline is midnight on Sunday.

I don't want it to be a no lynch (we need a majority vote).

Unofficial Vote Count

Falzis (3) - EM, ScoutX, Tobias Greene

Tobias Greene (3) - KevinH, Falzis, CanucksDynasty,

Not Voting (2) - Narsis, Aquinas

If it's "lynch someone ... anyone", why put a third vote on Tobias when it could be a fourth vote on Falzis?

Because I want to see how Narsis and Aquinas vote.

And yeah ... got a bit of time to play. :P

and i'm prob not voting until i figure out what Falzis/Aquinas meant by their exchange an Aquinas' dropped vote.

Because I want to see how Narsis and Aquinas vote.

Honestly, that was my intention as well voting for TG a page back, to see how Aquinas or Tobias would vote. But obviously it got across diffrently.

Not that it matters, but in 3 hours or so MY time the deadline approaches. I will be calculating and writing the next chapter, depending on how fantastic this evening goes. Her name is Emily, she's a Libra, and likes long walks on the beach, so I'm hoping it will go well. Pity the fool who decides to check the laundry room in about, uh, 25 minutes time.

That is all.

Vote: Tobias

i still find the exchange between Falzis and Aquinas interesting and would like an answer...

it does make me a bit hesitant to lynch Falzis though...in case he really is a power role.

Rub a dub dub,

Three men in a tub,

And who do you think they be?

The butcher, the baker,

The candlestick maker.

Turn them out, knaves all three

With the solemn stares of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, the townsfolk decide that that best option IS to kill someone. There were some arguments for, some arguments against, but the possibility of offing a Pod person just seemed too good to be passed up. More interestingly was how the town was split, all of them either backing the man who used them Holy words, or the more meek and quiet bread man. Some knew him for his sense of humour, all knew that he made great Viking rolls, Norwegian Whole Wheat slices, Cranberry Raisin Cheese Bread, and (of course) who could forget his Swedish Limpa?

Yes, you guys killed the baker.

The best question asked now is - what happened when he was hanged high? Rumour is, Donald had mentioned in passing that the bodies of these Pod people disintegrate in death. Well, if this is true, then Tobias was no Pod man. He was just a small time business owner who wanted to rise like the bread he so expertly made. And who is going to make your sandwiches now, people?

Don't feel too bad, though. Had it been a tie, Tobias would have still got it based on seniority (he had the oldest vote for him). Spreadsheet has been cleared, his name has been removed.

IT IS NOW NIGHT ONE. PM(s) have gone out, I will update when we are starting Day 2.
