It's Happening.... Again

The Happening.... *not* crap M. Night Shyamalan version

Scenario:

The once quiet town of Samwise Gamgee has been having some trouble recently: movie attendance is down, happiness seems at an all time low, and no-one is buying Valentine's cards! One resident - Donald Sutherland, a Canadian character actor with a film career spanning over 50 years - seems to remember a movie he once starred in that had a similar plot. He announces to the town there can only be ONE cause: people are being replaced by replicas grown from plantlike pods! He calls his out-of-town friend (and co-star in the 1978 movie), Leonard Nimoy, who reminds him how the movie had a totally crap ending for Humanity, and persuades Sutherland to run away with him. Together they will find William Shatner's truck bed camper (which he still lives in) and attempt to turn it into an inter-stellar ship.

Meanwhile, the nice townfolk stare at each other in confusion. What should decent, smart people do? MOVE, of course. What are YOU gonna do? Try to figure out who the pod guys are and lynch 'em during the daylight! I'm not kidding, folks. That's the plan, unless you want to "make like Sutherland" or "pull a Nimroy." Which would be totally lame, and your future children would disown you.

So there is good news and bad news. The bad news is, the pod people move at night - and might switcheroo OR kill one of the townsfolk (never both). The good news is, due to their desire to blend in, they will never switcheroo to a equal number or majority. If there are 3 townsfolk and 1 pod person, the next morning there will still be 3 townsfolk (if noone was murdered). If pod people outnumber or equal the Innocents during the day, the pods win, if the Innocents wipe out the pod people, Donald Sutherland can come home.

Rules:

[01] Votes should be in bold. If you do not bold your vote, it will not be counted, unless you're clever and add it to the spreadsheet also. Failsafe system!

[02] Please put some effort into making posts longer than 1 or 2 sentences. I can't force you to do it, but it would be helpful.

[03] Lynching will require a simple majority of votes. Once a player has reached the necessary majority, their pleas are useless and any attempts to unvote will be unheeded. The exception to this rule is if the deadline is reached, and no majority has been achieved - see below *

[04] You may vote: no lynch. Majority votes of this kind are necessary to end the day without a death.

[05] Once your death scene has been posted, you’re dead. You can make a single “Bah!” post but no relevant information.

[06] No small text. Don’t edit/delete previously submitted posts either.

[07] Don’t quote any PMs from me. If you do, I will destroy you.

[08] If you have a night choice to make, it is due by the posted deadline. I will not wait for you. If you do not submit a choice to me, I’ll flip a coin or get creative, depending on how much I've had to drink.

[09] If you anticipate being unavailable for more than a 24-hour period, please post a notice to that effect in the thread. Treat this game as a commitment. Be considerate – don’t leave us hanging.

[10] If you have any questions at all, please PM me or post the question in the thread.

[11] Remember, it’s a game and it’s supposed to be fun. Be nice to your fellow players.

*"What happens if the deadline is reached, and there is no 'majority'?" This is most likely to happen if either (1) some people are inactive, or don't vote or (2) the spread of votes is evenly distributed. In scenario 1, all those unvoting members at the deadline become "abstaining" and lose their vote that round, and in the case of (2) whoever has the oldest vote of lynch gets it. Believe it or not, this is to HELP the townies, trust me.

Vote for a player to be lynched by posting and using the NIFTY SPREADSHEET BELOW. The spreadsheet shows you (at any moment) how things stand, the posting is so historically people can look back and decide how evil or decent you are. Yes, we can also post votecounts, but the spreadsheet is the best way to make sure I don't miss something or screw up. If there are 2 players with the same amount of votes at deadline, then I will lynch the one who reached that number of votes first.

Players:

1/ ScoutX

2/ Falzis

3/ Aquinas

4/ CanucksDynasty

5/ KevinH

6/ Electric Mango

7/ Narsis

8/ Tobias Greene

Finally....

THE NIFTY SPREADSHEET OF AWESOMENESS

The above link is to a spreadsheet which lists everyone still alive, and a column for each player. This is to save me the endless back and forth that I've seen here. Open the sheet, find the column at the top with your name, and then place an X in that column under who you want killed (list of candidates is on the left).

YOU SHOULD ALL HAVE PMs SITTING IN YOUR INBOX WITH CHARACTERS. LET ME KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY SNAGS.

There is not much I can say at this point. I didn't vote the other day because I had no reason to believe in the case. The same reason I don't have a vote in now. I'd like my record to show that I vote on evidence when it presents itself. I don't find that scummy. However, I do see the case against me and I would probably agree with your reasoning if the tables were turned.

This will be an honest mistake if I go down. Townies keep this in mind in the coming days:

Since it's not me, it must be him.

I'm about 100% sure on this one, time to trust me guys.

Vote: Aquinas

hmm...

Vote: Aquinas

i dont know what it is about you EM...but something makes me trust you. that said i(and you) have been wrong in many games previously.

i could see this going either way really. however i feel that the chance of scum lurking is greater then the risk in voting. or rather: i see it more likely that Aquinas was lurking and hoping that I voted against CD(even then it wouldnt have necessarily had a change in the lynch...but maybe it would have) rather then EM risking a vote on someone he knew wasnt mafia.

btw i changed this post a couple times while writing...so my thoughts may be a bit jumbled.

Vote: Aquinas

And with that, additional votes are needed - the day is over (regardless of Aquinas' vote, it will either tie with him vs. EM, and he wins due to seniority [see my quote, Kevin voted for him Jan 29 2010, 11:19am], OR he votes for someone apart from EM, and he wins with 3 votes).

I'll post the next part of the story as soon as I get the chance. No matter what, the people have chosen Aquinas. Guess it pays to vote after all :)

Not in my case. The way I see it at this point, without any evidence against me or anyone else we are just as likely to lynch a townie blindly if I voted for any other individual. (Mind you, I don't me statistically; I mean through reasoning.)

Be weary of this in the future.

I'm glad that Aquinas is understanding.

But then again, a scum would try to act like a townie and be understanding ...

My vote stands and I really hope we don't have to apologize to Aquinas!

Apology accepted. Surely, my posts have led to a wrong lynch at your expense in the past.

Good luck gentlemen! Eyes on Electric Mango and Narsis coming up. Give the pods hell boys.

**Aquinas begins crafting his last candle for his funeral. The longest and hardest candle the world has ever seen.**

  • Author

[OOC: Sorry for the delay. I had a business trip to AZ, and it turns out AZ air either hates me or has some weird strain of flu virus I've never seen. I've spent more time on my back recently than this girl Emily I knew, and the only thing in the air that ever got HER in trouble was.... her legs]

Ahem, anyway:

Aquinas slowly crafted his last candle, the longest and hardest candle the village of Samwise had ever seen. The bartender, a regular customer of his, nodded in appreciation at the firm shaft and rounded tip. A single, solitary tear slipped down his cheek - and everyone got really, really wet. I mean, it started to rain pretty hard.

Unfortunately, Aquinas would never get to watch his last creation burn.

As the rope was slung high over that great tree (a different branch from the one Pod Man #1 was hanged on), Aquinas passed to KevinH his candle. Of all those present, he trusted this man the most - in some ways his vote had hurt the hardest. After a lifetime of knowing what to do with a candle, Aquinas was used to pain, but he never had thought it would come to this.

The crowd held their breath and waited for the tell-tale dissolving as Aquinas expired, but sadly nothing came. Just the sagging evidence that there was once a man here - Samwise had at some time possessed one more bright spirit, but that candle had been enthusiastically extinguished.

NIGHT THREE BEGINS

Edited by Bastille Hades

Aquinas was townie :(

This doesn't look good for me and I fully expect to be lynched tomorrow even though I'm a townie, I know if I were you guys that I would lynch me too. There's nothing I can really do or say to prove that I'm a townie and that the mafia have pulled a fast one on us.

Good luck town

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE...... BACKWARDS EDITION!

Now with added hindsight!

Alas, the game is over and the battle not won, as there was indeed a night kill. When the people of Samwise awoke the next morning, they found their friendly Bartender stabbed to death with a sharpened candle. Ironically, it looked very much like the hard wax of Aquinas' craftsmanship. Poor ScoutX, getting it as if from beyond the grave....

There only being four townspeople total, and two of them Pod people, the forces of human nature stand no chance against the greater threat of the plants. Soon Mark Wahlberg will be joined by a almost-all-star cast of people who run away from trees when they begin to rustle in the wind. Yes, The Happening is here - and the untold beginnings of these dark die were cast in a small town, where a young man named Narsis was the first lone Pod person, never suspected and *very* good at his infiltration job.

What would happen if the investigator targetted the same person a pod person wanted to convert?

Were the investigator and friend immune to conversion?

  • Author

The conversion happened at the beginning of the night, the investigation then occurred. So, for example, if I was converted and then investigated, I would be reported as Pod. KevinH was the investigator, and in this scenario that happened, as he was interested in Falzis right after the man was converted by Narsis.

As to if the Investigator or Friend could be converted, the answer is no. However, they could be killed. This never came up, as the two conversions from Narsis were Falzis and you, Canuk.

Answer your questions?

Who were the investigator and friend?

Narsis converted me on N1 thinking I had a power role... but yeah I win with the Pod people!! :)

KevinH was the investigator, ScoutX the friend. I thought things would get interesting when ScoutX asked me to tell Narsis he was 100% for sure human, as it would be a weird PM for a Pod to get, but he went ahead and converted Canuk anyway.

So far Falzis you're batting 2 for 2 - and I'm still scared of your prowess from Game 1, where you singlehandedly took down the Robots.

Good game, although I thought the odds were a little stacked for the pod people.

With only one pod person to start, two people nonconvertible, a cop and a friend? Day 1 it could have been over, had Narsis picked the cop or friend to convert he would be on his own day 2, so it could have been over then too. At any time he picked wrong, it could have been over. Also, had kevinH investigated the right person, it would have been over.

I ran the numbers on this and all the probabilities seemed to balance, if not favor the townies right at the beginning and slowly switch over time. Your best bet (I think) would have been to not lynch on day 3, giving the town the NEXT DAY option to lynch on a 3v2 where the odds are more in your favor (had there been a nightkill). If there was no nightkill, you would probably be in a happily ever after scenario, as the no-lynch / no nightkill would have meant peace in our time.

Yeah...it seems more balanced when you get to know the power roles in play.

2 people non-convertable with good abilities is indeed a strong advantange.

The "friend" ability was rather weak, but had I allowed for TWO powerful "power" roles that couldn't be Pod'ded it would have been game over for the Pods. Unless we started with two Pods, and then THAT would skew the conversion method as they would grow too quickly.

Like I said, I really made an effort to balance this. But I expected the town to win in the first 2 days, FYI, one correct lynch or one mis-conversion (odds were high he'd try to convert a power role) followed by the lynch would have ended it. Narsis earned his W.

Indeed Narsis did a good job.

He converted Falzis who (as I understand) was gonna vote for him on D2.

And then he converted me as I was gonna vote for him on D3 (for the 4th vote...possible bussing).
