General Rules

(Stolen from my last game)

1. This is game. Play to win; expect to lose. And have fun.

2. No editing or deleting posts.

3. No talking to other players outside the game thread unless your Role PM states specifically that you can.

4. No quoting any PMs from me, including Role PMs. Doing so will get you modkilled. Paraphrasing is OK. If you are worried about something not being ok, then either PM me or just dont say it.

5. Vote for a player to be lynched by using the Vote: Narsis format. You dont need to unvote before voting again, but it is appreciated(especially if you dont vote again right away).

6. Days will last 10 days. Nights will last up to 72 hours, but may be cut short if I get all actions in before then, with a minimum 24 hour night.

6-1. If discussion is lagging, I may impose a shorter deadline at my own discretion. Deadline extensions will happen on request - but will only happen once per day at most, and if I feel there's enough activity to warrant one.

7. A lynch requires a majority (50% rounded down + 1) vote. You can also No Lynch, by using Vote: No Lynch.

7-1. If there is no majority by deadline, only a half-majority is needed. (Majority / 2, rounded up if necessary)

7-2. If there are 2 players with the same amount of at least half-majority votes at deadline, then I will lynch the one who reached that number of votes first.

8. After someone has been lynched, discussion may continue until I can get to the thread and end the day. If you are dead you may continue to post until your death scene is posted. After that point I will only allow a Bah post, and only if you were night killed.

9. Don't use small / invisible font, don't use coloured text(except for mole who is allowed to use orange if he is acting as the super moderator of the forum), and don't use any form of clever encryption or code in your messages.

10. If you haven't posted in 2 days, I'll prod you. If you don't pick up that prod AND post within 48 hours, I'll replace you.

10-1. If you need to be replaced for whatever reason, please PM me, don't flake.

10-2. If you are V/LA, don't rely on me checking the thread / your signature. Please post in the thread notifying me of your V/LA or PM me about it.

10-3. If you replace out, you automatically lose. If you are someone replacing in, whether it counts as a win or loss depends on how long you have been replaced in for.

11. Vote counts will be made whenever I feel like it(or it is asked) and will be done in a separate post.

13. I hope it isn't necessary, but any modkills will negatively effect the rule-breaker's faction in some way which I see fit. If you are modkilled, you lose, no matter how the game ends.

14. I can change, add, or edit rules as I see fit. I will notify players in-thread if this happens.

15. I am not perfect. I may have got something wrong. I may have missed a rule out. Let me know, ask me questions, but don't abuse my mistakes.

15-1. To get my attention in-thread, use the MOD: <Your message> format. Or, y'know, you could PM me.

Special Rules

(stolen from one of the PYP games on mafiascum and edited for this game)

These rules are unique to this game. Probably worth a look at some point.

This is a semi-open setup: 4 mafia and 11 town. Each player will receive one of the following PMs:

Mafia wrote:

You are a part of the mafia along with X, Y, and Z. Each night the four of you can choose a player in the town to kill, though you are not forced too. Before the game begins, the four of you have 96 hours to talk and decide on which four poweroles the town will have, from the list of seven given in the rules post. Because of the importance of the decision, I'd like confirmation from at least three of you as to the choices being made. Oh, and remember, you can communicate in private with your partners at any point during the game.

You win when the town no longer has the majority of votes.

Townsperson wrote:

You are a townsperson. At present you have no abilities other than your voice and your vote, but it's possible you will receive a useful ability. You will be told at the start of day 0 what your ability is if any, otherwise you're just a vanilla townie.

You win when the mafia has been eliminated.

During the pregame stage, the mafia will have a maximum of 96 hours to choose four (different) protown poweroles from the following list:

Macho Cop wrote:

You are a macho cop. Every night you may investigate another player and receive a guilty or innocent result from me. You cannot be protected by a doctor if there are any doctors.

Doctor wrote:

You are a doctor. Every night you can give me the name of a player you want to protect; they will be immune to all kills that night. You may not protect yourself.

Weak doctor wrote:

You a weak doctor. Every night you can give me the name of a player you want to protect; you will block one kill against them that night. If you protect a member of the mafia, you will be killed that night. You may not protect yourself.

4-shot Vig wrote:

You are a vigilante. Each night you have the option of killing another player who you suspect is scum. You only have four shots and can only shoot once per night.

Bulletproof wrote:

You are bulletproof. You will block one night kill against you each night.

Vengeful wrote:

You are vengeful. If/when you are lynched, during the next night, and next night only, you can send me the name of one of the people that voted for you. A night kill will be attempted against them. This ability can't be roleblocked.

Detective wrote:

You are a detective. Each you can choose another player to track and watch that night. I will tell you who they targeted and who targeted them last night.

Once the mafia have chosen, the poweroles are immediately distributed randomly to four members of the town. The game then starts with day 0. During day 0, everyone gets to vote for three perks to give the mafia, from the following list:

4-shot roleblocker wrote:

You are a 4-shot roleblocker. Four times during the game, at night, you can block another player from taking any nightactions. If that player is a cop or detective they will be notified of the block, otherwise they won't be.

Day Rolecop wrote:

You are a day rolecop. Each day you may investigate another player and find out their full role.

1-shot janitor wrote:

You are a 1-shot janitor. Once during the game, before a lynch has taken place, you may PM me and ask for the lynched player's alignment to be covered up. You may not cover up your own alignment in this way.

Godfather wrote:

You are a godfather. Any cop investigations against you will show the opposite of their expected result, and any nightkills against you will fail. You also have the option of allowing a weak doctor to protect you and still survive; you can use this on any night by PMing me.

Ninja wrote:

You are a ninja. You will not show up to the detective as targeting anyone, or being targeted by anyone.

Bus driver wrote:

You are a bus driver. During the night you may "switch" two players. Any actions against the first player, will instead be used against the second and vice versa. You will be seen as targeting both players however.

Everyone has three votes on day 0, and these can be removed and changed as often as you like, just as with normal voting. Note that you can't place all your votes on the same perk, however. When a choice reaches 8 votes, it's locked in and can't be changed. When three perks/abilities have been chosen, the mafia have a brief period to decide amongst themselves which of them get which perk, and which one stays as a goon. After that, the game starts with day 1, and from them on progresses normally. Note that the mafia in this game can talk during day as well as night.

Using the "I'm a newbie" defense to avoid bad reasoning is rather suspect. For lack of a better option,

Vote: AKCPLUTO

Not to mention that he seems to really doesn't care about the game either , so bottom line that's what make me suspect of you, because if you really care about it, you'd be helping us hunt the scums, but that's isn't what you'r doing, for now i'll just FoS you

FoS: AKCPLUTO

You dont have to give a reason for every vote, do you? I mean, is it an actual rule or just expected?

He should be free to say or not say whatever he wants, I'd think... there's enough talking that goes on otherwise XD

A No-Lynch serves no purpose for the town if the town has no cops.

We get no lynch information and we just lost a townie at night.

We're back at square 1 with one less townie.

So yeah...I want to know the reason for a no-lynch vote.

It's not an actual rule, but I would say that in general you are expected to explain your vote. After all, the lynch is our strongest weapon and by voting you are trying to get us to use it in a certain way. So of course it is then important to explain why you want to do that. More importantly, it is very convenient for the mafia to vote without posting a reason. It allows them to move the lynch in a certain direction without us being able to hold them accountable. For example, if the mafia votes townie A without giving a reason and we end up lynching him, he could just claim it was a random vote and he didn't really mean for us to lynch him. Of course, we could point out that he should have unvoted when it seemed like we were going to lynch A, but then usually the inactivity excuse pops up. It's much better to avoid such situations. Therefore, if all townies give their reason when they vote, the mafia has to do the same. This has as the added advantage that the mafia knows the player they are voting for is not mafia. So they need to come up with a false reason and they may slip up in doing so.

Thank you both for the explanation, particularly Martino's last line - that makes a lot of sense. Hopefully I'll be into the full swing of this by day 2 or so :)

Your doing for fine for your first game preston so don't worry

Yes copying a strategy where it be used or not is very bad idea so the scum radar has been sounded

I don't think no lynch has ever been effective expect maybe once and I definetly isn't the best strategy here either considering what has already been said

On another note my vote on ccabl86 was random and no way correlates with his first statement

How many times have I said "I told you so" after not getting my way on a no-lynch?

Yes, no-lynch does work sometimes.

Regarding the odd vs even argument, that excludes the possibility of a successful block of a night-kill by a doctor or the extra kill of a vigilante.

In this game, if we don't lynch there is nothing to be gained (assuming no cop).

If there is a weak doctor, I have a suggestion for you:

Put a lynch vote or suspicion on the player you intend to protect that night. Then if you get killed by protecting a mafia, we'll know whom to lynch next. You won't have to role-claim but we'll have the information after the fact.

He seems to play like that even in the previous game.

Curufinwe and Yahna haven't been very active as well to this point just as 19ththespecops has. I'd prefer if he wasn't just singled out and we should be aware a significant portion of towns are just sitting there uselessly. Their existence only serves to the advantage of the mafia and hopefully the MOD can poke them just as it was attempted on the first inactive mentioned.

Canucks Dynasty

Excuses excuses....

What do you mean in the bolded part..."can not pick exactly what we don't want anymore, the macho cop"?

It didn't make sense to me.

I meant that since we picked Ninja and Godfather we wouldn't really want a macho cop anymore. My quoted text indicates the townie roles were chosen by mafia before the entire roster chose mafia roles. I wasn't sure if this was mentioned earlier or not but wanted to point it out for myself and anyone who didn't know.

I took a side in the Martino/Kevin thing and couldn't come up with a good reason either way but was hoping for some bandwagoning. I'm dead meat now...

How many times have I said "I told you so" after not getting my way on a no-lynch?

Yes...you have said "I told you so" many times.

But we still get valuable info for that lynch.

That is an intriging use of the Weak Doctor role. Giving up your life to implicate a mafia member. We'd be down one townie but we would also get to lynch mafia. That's a good trade off. However, it would be best if all the townies do the same but pick different people so that there the Weak Doctor is not singled out and that we would know clearly who he tried to protect. It wouldn't work against the Godfather cuz of the mafia special ability but would work for the rest of them unless the roleblocker targets the Weak Doctor correctly.

You've given the town a way to find mafia at the cost of a Weak Doctor. I'm thinking you're a townie now.

I think may be Mafia

AKCPluto

Actually, KevinH's strategy sounds really good at first, but in it's original form it's more anti-town than pro-town. IMO the mafia can narrow down our weak doctor very, very fast and eliminate him before he's any use to the town.

Remember, if we do this, the weak doctor may NEVER vote with the majority. We can compensate somewhat with CD's suggestion (If I'm reading it correctly, he's saying that we should spread out our votes and only have the lynch candidate "win" by a small margin), but since I assume the voters would shuffle, after 2-3 days the mafia woud have a pretty good idea about who the weak doctor is (one of the people who have never voted with the majority).

If we DON'T apply CD's idea (the vote spreading) the mafia could easily pin down the weak doctor in 1-2 days

FoS: KevinH

Because:

1, He urged us to vote for the more "powerful" mafia roles if we don't have investigators

2, He abandoned his usual "No-lynch" strategy

3, Suggested a strategy that seems OK at first, but not so great once you think it through.

I'm with you on your line of thinking ccabal86. It sounds good in theory but the mafia could definitely use it to their advantage later in the game. Whether Kevin's intentions were pure we will have to wait and see. I give townie points to ccabl86 for pointing this out. Good show.

REASON FOR EDIT: b tag fail

I had to read Kevin's, CD's and your(ccabal's) post a few times to get what you all mean about 'using' the weak doctor - and I think at this point we're assuming we have one, since there've been several posts about it. My understanding of the composite idea is that everyone (not just w.d.) targets someone else, and if w.d. dies then whoever they were targeting is now suspect. That said, it feels like the results are a little iffy - or at least prone to possible inaccuracy. Here's how I'm reading it; can I get some thoughts/opinions?

1 person dies: Either the lone mafia kill and w.d. didn't find mafia, mafia kill and w.d. was blocked from finding mafia (roleblocker/godfather), mafia DIDNT kill (blocked by doctor/bullet proof /they chose not to) and w.d died.

This first case seems potentially ambiguous. Odds of mafia a) knowing w.d. is targeting them AND choosing not to nightkill to throw everyone off track are slim, but it's far more possible mafia will be blocked AND w.d. will die in the same night - especially if we have the setup of roles that we've basically agreed upon by now (no investigative roles), which means we would have two blockers (doctor/bulletproof) that could make this happen. We have 2 of 3 cases that the person who died was town, but it's possible in the 1/3 case that mafia could both eliminate w.d. AND have one of theirs 'proven' town by this method, which is a little dangerous.

2 people die: Either mafia kill AND w.d. found mafia, in which case both people who died are highly suspect, or it's a vengeful kill + mafia kill which could totally throw us off track. We could kinda guess the second if someone who died was part of the previous day's majority though.

Actually that's a good question now that I think about it: if we lynch someone or mafia kills them, do we SEE if they were the vengeful so we can expect their kill the next night (lynch) or NOT expect their kill for the rest of the game (mafia kill)? I'd bet not, but it's possible depending on Narsis' ruling - and if a vengeful was about to get lynched, they might reveal themselves anyway so their kill doesnt confuse the town when 2 (or 3) deaths happen that night.

If we ever see 2 people die, that's the intended "win" for this strategy - most likely that w.d just found their target, which would also probably validate previous 1 death/night results.

3 people die: It seems possible (though insane :D) for three kills to happen in one night; mafia kill, w.d. dies, and vengeful kills. If this happens, we have three people who for CERTAIN one of them is mafia - all 3 roles are in play, and therefore all previous 1 death/night results WERE valid - but we've just lost a minimum of two townies in the process, and the third could be either townie or mafia depending on vengeful's luck. We would have to suspect all 3 people targeted by those who died.

With all this said... if there is a weak doctor like we think, we're going to run into the above 2 or 3 scenarios anyway, plan or no plan. We might as well have everyone list a contingency "If I die, suspect this person" or something, so we'll have at least SOME information to work with. It doesnt NEED to be VOTING with the majority as you (ccabal) said, does it? Call it something like ICoD (In Case of Death), DV (Death Vote), LW (Last Will), etc - come up with a different term for it.

I've re-read this a few times and it all FEELS like it holds together (and is long) - a sortof preemptive analysis for the cases we're going to encounter. Please let me know what you all think; hopefully I'm not completely extrapolating way too far here :)

-Preston

Addendum (Since we're not supposed to edit) - I missed the single-death case where W.D. could be targetting someone town and mafia's night kill picks them off through luck/chance/guesswork. That would complicate things - especially if their role is revealed upon death (it is, isnt it?), and we now think the townie they targeted is mafia for the next day's lynch.

Though in the mafiascum.net wiki (referenced via Martino's helpful post when I started), it says about doctors

When a Game Moderator uses these roles, the player receiving the role is usually only told his/her role is Doctor. Sometimes sanity is revealed upon death, but frequently not, leading to ambiguity if a Doctor is killed early in the game.
Do we know if this is what Narsis did/will do?

And actually I'm going to officially ask Narsis the following questions:

MOD:

1. When someone dies by lynch or mafia kill, is their role revealed?

1a. If roles are revealed, is Vengeful also revealed or is it something that happens silently for us to figure out?

1b. If roles are revealed, would we see Weak Doctor as Weak Doctor or Doctor?

2. Was weak doctor actually TOLD they were the weak doctor, or just that they were a doctor?

-Preston

Editing is a no-no and is punishable with a modkill.

KevinH idea isn't so bad but needs to be flushed out more.

My line in thinking is more akin to Preston than what you thought I meant.

Maybe something like Preston's idea...

In Case of Death: player A.

Or just go down the list for the weak doctor...

#1 protects #2

#2 protects #3

...

#14 protects #15

#15 protects #1

Basically it's circular and the identity of the weak doctor is well hidden.

If we find out the weak doctor died...then that should point out to the the player he tried to protect.

How am I supposed to prove my innocence now? Sigh. I'm going to vote: KevinH then.

Yeah, you're not helping your case with these last few posts. I feel pretty good about my vote now.

I will also FOS ccabal86. While your first reason for FOSing KevinH is acceptable, it is a little late to bring that up now. The other two are clearly reaching. Yes, KevinH is not voting no lynch, but that is not suspicious. While I greatly disagree with his usual no lynch strategy, his reason has always been that he wants to play follow the cop. Since there is no cop, he has no reason to vote no lynch. His proposed strategy involving the weak doc is actually really interesting and most certainly not anti town. Yeah, the mafia may eventually figure out who the weak doc is, however, there is a good chance he will stumble upon a mafia before they do find him and even otherwise he will give us some information. At most one of the people he targetted in the nights that he did not die can be mafia (the godfather).

Perhaps the best way for us to prevent the mafia from finding out the weak doc would be to have a unofficial vote for the weak doc target. So basicaly everyone would just put up a weak doc target vote and the weak doc would then target the one who got the most votes. In case of a tie he would chose the one who reached that number of votes first. The only disadvantage is that the mafia would be able to influence that vote. I'd suggest that, at least for today, we select someone who is in the middle of the pack suspicion wise. My personal preference would be Nerau.

I can heartily agree with this approach as the weak doc would never be found out this way. I suggest we do this.

I am not quite sure why my reasoning doesn't make sense to you. KevinH's original strategy is clearly anti town. Going by our present numbers this is how voting will probably happen:

Candidate "A" --> 8 votes

Candidate "B" --> 3 votes

Candidate "C" -->2 votes

Not voting --> 2

The weak doc has to be in that 5 not voting with the majority. Suppose you have 2 mafia members voting for "B" and "C", that leaves mafia guessing the weak doc from the remaining 3. And that is just day 1. On day two, the votes are shuffled around, but weak doc again votes with the minority. The mafia can exclude the people that voted with the majority on day 1 and voila...they will most certainly find weak doc at the end of day 2. Weak doc probably won't find anything in this timeframe.

Yeah, you're not helping your case with these last few posts. I feel pretty good about my vote now.

That is my concern with such a system.

But it's still not so bad...at least we can still get info similar to the the lynch info.

I still think it would be best to follow my strategy.

It's random enough so that mafia can't target the weak doc.

And the roleblocker would be wasting his 4 attempts randomly.

But whatever the majority decides I guess.

I think Martino's suggestion is nice.

Yes the mafia could influence the vote but

having like two votes (lynch and weak doc target)

will give us double the information and more chances

of the mafia to make mistakes.

But yes I'm also afraid that the influence of the mafia will

increase as the number of times we mislynch increases.

I suggest people who don't post much should be targeted

by the weak doc.
