The Dead Zone Mafia, Mafia Wins

The guests sit down to dinner. They had each won an essay writing contest sponsored by Horror writer Stephen King. They had to explain which character from the television show The Dead Zone was there favorite and why. There had been tens of thousands of entries and only one entry was picked for each character.

Here you are now one of the chosen few, sitting down to dinner with Stephen King himself at the welcoming party he is throwing at his Maine estate for the winners before the start of the grand prize, a Dead Zone themed weekend that will be attended by the actors who played your favorite characters.

Dinner is over and you all go off to bed, after all tomorrow is going to be a big day. There was a major storm during the night and you hardly slept at all between the thunder and anticipation. You head on down to the dining room for breakfast.

Good morning everyone, I hope you had a good night’s sleep. I regret to inform you that the bridge is out; it seems it was swept away in
the storm. Sadly this means that the cast will not be able to get here. The lights suddenly go out and there is a loud roar of thunder and a bolt of lightning illuminates the room. The lights quickly come back on but you decide it’s better to be safe and hand out flashlights to all the guests only something is wrong. As you give the last of the guests a flashlight you realize there isn’t one left for you. “This is strange, there were only supposed to be the x of you and I had enough flashlights for myself and each of you. It appears someone has crashed the party.” Before Mr. King can elaborate the lights go out again, only this time they stay out for several minutes. When the lights come back on you see Mr. King covered in blood, dead from multiple stab wounds. There is a note written in almost illegible writing.

“Welcome to The Dead Zone. By now you have probably begun to notice that things are not quite right. No matter for worry, I simply drugged last night’s meal. I’m sorry I had to kill Mr. King but he said I was not important enough for the contest, so nobody wrote letters for me. It’s time to play a little game, were going to see just how well you know your favorite characters. You have to figure out who I am before I kill all of you. The lights are set to go out again in 1 hours’ time, at which point I will kill again. We will keep playing this little game until you are all dead, good luck.”

Panic starts to spread until Reverend Purdy stands up and calls for calm. Wait Reverend Purdy, but he’s a fictional character. He seems to be making sense so you decide to go with it. The group all agrees with his plan, you will work together to find the killer before time runs out. People start making wild accusations about each other before Greg Stillson calls for quite; at this point fictional characters are the least of your concern. He suggests that we vote on whom to kill, surprisingly Johnny agrees with him.

Just a theory, eh? Kind of like evolution and gravity are just theories. :P I assume you mean hypothesis, which to a certain extent it is.

Killgor thought iSocialism was worthy enough for night protection as evidenced by Ogaden.  Ogaden, who has the role of Dana Bright, the reporter, also saw Bruce, the sidekick played by Kaz come and go as well.  We know Kaz wasn't the SK or making a mafia kill because we got two kills on night 1, and I seriously doubt any vig, if there is one, spent their ability on night 1 on killgor or EM.  I say he's Bruce because 1. Bruce is a major character in the show, 2. is likely to be in the setup, and 3.  it's likely he was doing a protection action on iSoc, which is consistent with my thoughts of Bruce being a sidekick (and if that's the case, that's another person making night actions on the belief that iSoc is town).  The only hitch to this is if iSoc is actually scum and is faking jailing people.  I don't think that's the case for reasons already explained.

As for trusting my word... I'm sticking my neck out on this.  Lynch me or lynch Kevinh.  Lynch me today and you'll lynch a townie that is open enough to do a callout like this.  If Kevinh is town, then obviously I'm next on the chopping block for a lynch, so unless you expect town to lose at night on day 2, I'd think there shouldn't be a problem with this.

The problem with us backing you up, I just don't have the feeling or the evidence that KevinH is scum. He does seem a little fishy, but so does some other players. If we vote for him and he turns out to be town, then we would go for you. If you are a townie as well. We are losing two days of lynching.

Plus we still have about 4 RL days left. That is still time to gather information.

I never do like a person that doesn't post much, and there are still a few out there.

Also Shepard if I did not leave my room, how could I kill someone. You guys are failing to make that connection.

I never said you killed someone or tried to kill someone.

I'm just saying if you used your power and Dahl posts later in response that you did not leave your room then that leaves two possibilities.

I will wait for Dahl to respond anyway, just to clarify if you left your room or not.

I was only watching iSocialism's room, I wasn't following iSocialism and he could have jailed someone earlier in the night before he was in his room, all I know is he had two visitors.

(ooc: watch ability not track ability, I didn't see if iSocialism used his jail ability or not)

If it's a Watcher role in the traditional sense, he could have left the room.

From mafiascum,net:

The Tracker learns who a player targeted, but not what action that player performed.

The Follower learns what action a player performed, but not who that player targeted.

The Watcher learns who targeted a player, but not what actions were performed on them.

The Voyeur learns what actions were performed on a player, but not who targeted them.

Regarding Iron Helix's gauntlet challenge, I decline. He's active and scum-hunting and that's good.

Zacch, meanwhile, is doing nothing for the town and could just as easily be scum.

Gathering information is the town's number 1 objective. The fact that you are literally saying we don't need that information just because it tells the scum that he is the jailer (which they already know if he is or not based on whether he is one of them or not). So you are literally saying that the town doesn't need free information.....

Way to misrepresent what I wrote.  I said the scum want to know who he protected, not to confirm he's a jailer, but because that let's them know how to target people/use their power roles better.  Show me where I "literally" said "because it tells the scum he is the jailer".

Or he will be scum and you will have left an obvious scum lynch open drawing nothing but suspicion to yourself for defending him.

I'm willing to defend him.  If he dies and is scum, I'll take the risk of suspicion coming my way.

Again, iSoc had a good point that you can't force iSoc's jailed target to either confirm or deny.  More to the point, we don't know what kind of manipulation roles are out there.  There's also the possibility that iSoc's target doesn't want to be called out.  And let's say you were right and iSoc is scum... him calling someone out would just mean he'd call out another scum player and we'd be unsure if they're both town or scum.  If any one of these things turn out to be the case, going through all this trouble to get 100% certainty today that he's the jailer is going to make all this pointless.  I'm fairly certain and am willing to take the risk that Ogaden (Dahl), Kaz and iSoc are town.  The roles and the night events fit together to me to the extent that I believe this to be so.

I'm asking that other townies help lynch who I see to be most scummy at this time, Kevinh (and d3mon).

It doesn't matter if they don't want to be called out. They don't have to reveal their role, just that they were jailed. If he called out a scum then we may believe him for now, but we would continue to ask him for who he targeted and if it wasn't true then we would know that all players who previously claimed to have been blocked were scum as well. basically guaranteeing that the town wins. The point is, we won't get 100% certainty that he is the jailer today. We can potentially find out that he is NOT, or that someone else is not.

Keeping my vote where it is. also....

I'm not asking us to lynch iSoc yet, I want to know who he claims to have targeted and then have them confirm or deny. Obviously if they deny his claim it is still not 100% on which one is telling the truth, but it gets us a step closer because one of them is scum, so even if we mis-lynch we will guaranteed lynch a scum the next day. Please understand the strategy that I'm spelling out for you and understand that it is the best option for the town at this point in time.

And IF my night action was blocked and no one was jailed? I understanding where you are coming from and your strategy. I have look over it and thought about it myself. However with no one coming forward saying that they are Anna Turner and with a confirm jailed person. I think there's no need for me to tell anyone who I tried to jail.

The way I see with other people's input is that I run the risk of having my night action block and if that is so no one would have been jailed, leaving me to be lynch if people agree on it. After that you will see that I'm Anna Turner as I claimed to be and then you would turn your attention to the person that I tried to jail and was unsuccessful at. This wasting two day and allowing my innocents to be killed during the day and night.

If your night action was blocked then you should have come out and said that from the start (though then it would just turn into a debate of how impossibly suspicious that is). Is that the case? By the way, you won't run any greater risk of having your ability blocked then if you didn't say who you targeted, the point is that scum know if you are who you say you are, and town doesn't.

I guess that's fair enough.  You're doing all this on the assumption that he's scum, because like you said, you can't guarantee he's town.  I don't like doing this, but since you're so adamant about it, I was jailed.  My belief is that it was iSoc who did it.  I think Walt Bannerman is a cop role based on the dead miller role and Anna Turner should be the only other active police character in play.  I was fairly sure that he wasn't lying when he first claimed because Anna Turner was a main character and claiming to be a jailer (of all possible claims) would be extremely tough for a mafioso to back up.  That I was jailed beyond proved what was to me an already obvious town player.

I think this was a bad idea to need to have to come out and make this claim, but given the course the discussion is going, with unproductive questioning of iSoc, it was necessary.  Now of course, the consequence is that iSoc is going to be a prime candidate for a night kill (when we don't have a doctor)... and someone such as yourself can still pile on and question whether iSoc is a jailer.... for today at least.  I'm assuming either he or I will be killed at night (killing either one of us will confirm he is/was the jailer).

If your night action was blocked then you should have come out and said that from the start (though then it would just turn into a debate of how impossibly suspicious that is).

BTW I don't think that's suspicious at all if it had been the case.  It's pretty obvious this is a game of Role Madness with nearly everyone having a power role.  The scum are guaranteed to have power roles of their own, blocking being one of the more likely possibilities.

As an upside, as a consequence of being jailed, and since there were 2 kills at night, I should be cleared of being the SK.

It actually doesn't, we don't know who killed who.

It could have being a vigilante and a scum group, we don't know how many scum groups there are either.

We don't know if a SK can bypass being jailed once, well maybe we do but I don't know.

Either way I don't think it clears you of being an SK if there is an SK.

Well if it was a vigilante who killed, then they killed on night 1 on killgor or EM.  It's certainly possible, but seems unlikely to me.  As for the number of scum groups, that should be relatively easy to know if you have a familiarity with the tv show.  The primary antagonist throughout all 6 seasons was Greg Stillson and the people surrounding him.  Interspersed through the show were occasional 1 episode murder mysteries, which would be the SK.  Possibly there could be two serial killers, but if you think two jailers is overkill then 2 serial killers is even more so.

##Lynch: KevinH

I'm cool with lynching KevinH. I find him more suspicious than Iron Helix.

KevinH is actually just restating facts and doing little analysis and he is advocating to lynch inactives.

Lynching inactives is a nice way to waste a town's vote because the vote analysis for that day

would be more or less useless. It's also easier for scum to lynch them. Lynching an active player is riskier for scum.

---

IMHO iSocialism should tell who he targeted last night.

If iSocialism is jk and is killed, then his information is lost forever.

It wouldn't help us right now but it could help in the later days.

---

Well since unfortunately James Dahl prematurely claimed a power role,

I am Dana Bright a reporter looking for a story (aka watcher).

Apparently I covered much of Johnny's early work whoever he is.

I watched iSocialism because he might killed and I found out that

killgor and Ogaden (James Dahl) targetted him.

Now this is weird because James Dahl is also a watcher (though stalker in flavor)

Well since this is a theme game, I'm not ruling out the possibility that there might

be two watchers in the game (well I had two doctors in my first modded game

though the other one is special).

since you people don't know how to read let me spell it out. The point is to ask whoever you targeted (or claim to have targeted) if they had their night action blocked, which would imply they made a night action. if they did not then whatever it is irrelevant anyway and no information is gained. If they did then we can try to confirm your role isoc.

The point isn't who you targeted, the point is confirming your role. As I said before, refusal will signify to me you aren't who you say. therefore,

Vote Isocialism

I'm not really sure if you can confirm iSocialism's role by finding out who he targeted last night.

If he's scum, he could just claim he targeted his teammate and his teammate will agree or something.

Well if there is a seer then we can get two scums instantly, not a bad deal. Though iSoc's name claiming is proof enough IMO

That said, I can trust iSoc and Kaz (and probably Ogaden if he explains more)

Not to mention there may be a vig that didn't NK anyone last night :awesome:

I'm not entirely comfortable lynching one of the more active players on little information other than suspicious posts.

But this day just about run it's course and it is unlikely we will lynch anyone else.

I think it requires 8 votes to lynch.

##Lynch: KevinH

We've got some time before the day is over.. I'll have to think about this and go through the posts again to make a decision.

I think you're already voting to lynch KevinH, Kazicore.

The mod said that I was not following directions so I re-voted

Also nobody hammers anybody without a claim and without first stating an intent to hammer

Zacch: 1 (KevinH)

Day 2 ends Saturday September 14th at 10 PM EST

With 6 votes, I am being forced to role claim.  It's probably going to make me a target for the night kill but that's better than being lynched and having yet another townie night-killed.

I am Christopher Way, vigilante.

I did not use my kill last night so there is probably a serial killer or two scum factions in the game.

KevinH is actually just restating facts and doing little analysis and he is advocating to lynch inactives.

Lynching inactives is a nice way to waste a town's vote because the vote analysis for that day

I think it would be much worse for the town to have the active townies dead and the inactive townies still in the game.

If I'm lynched and proven to be town, will those that voted be accused of being scum?

FoS: Kaziocore, Imran Ehsan, Iron Helix, Lyner, Commander Shepard, Alternate_Tree

Of course, the defense will be that the town had to try and lynch somebody ...

I would be particularly suspicious of the next 2 hammer votes. The scum want to lynch a townie and it seems like I'm their best option.

But it's not too late.  We've got three days left, and there doesn't seem to be any hints from a cop so I recommend lynching an inactive.

Zacch is the best choice for the lynch.

Lynch: Kilgor

please vote in the ##lynch name format

First off, it's unlikely that scum are going to role claim their actual character roles.  For instance, whoever has the roles of Greg Stillson or Malcom Janus are unlikely to claim their role as "Greg Stillson - (town)  [insert fake role here]". It's too easy to know who the characters who are the scum based off the tv show.  What that means is scum are going to try and camouflage themselves as non-villainous characters.  The main non-villainous characters are likely distributed in the game to the actual town players. Mod could have thrown a curveball here and there -- maybe removing a main character and inserting a relatively minor character instead, but that's not going to be the case for the most part (if at all).  Like the theme background said on day 1, the hints are available to you if you know the show.  That's going to mean town will need to look for inconsistencies in character roles and judge the probability that those characters would show up, or that they're even characters to begin with.

With that said, let's break down KH's claims here.

1. Vigilante claim: vigilante is a favorite claim for mafia and SK's (SKs especially).  His claim of night events are such that unless someone stalked him (which shouldn't happen since there were already two of those in play), no one is going to be able to contest that.

2. Christopher Wey, while not a 1-episode character, was not exactly a major character.  The chance of someone counterclaiming to be Christopher Wey as opposed to Johnny Smith (for example) are minuscule.

3.  There were only 3 characters in the show that someone came close to being classified as a vigilante.  Christopher Wey was not one of them.  I again find it unlikely that if Christopher Wey was in the game as town, that he'd be given that role.  Christopher Wey, to enlighten you guys, was a guy who had a psychic connection to Johnny Smith from several years in the future (a post-apocalyptic future) who tried to warn Smith that he wasn't doing enough to stop Greg Stillson.  Christopher Wey never once was shown to have killed or have tried to kill anyone.  The role doesn't fit, IMO.

4. KH's post here: link is full of questions that don't do anything to help town but call on other people to start casting aspersions.  This was the first red flag (if you ignore the no lynch on day 1).  Then he ignores those questions that he raised when no one took the bait and then goes to try and lynch inactives.  Lynching inactives isn't exactly a problem, but jumping from asking "questions" to doing something relatively static in terms of scum-finding, is IMO the 2nd red flag.  Next he makes this post about iSoc being the jailer.  His first sentence is he doesn't understand the reasoning about keeping the target a secret.

I don't understand the reasoning about keeping the jailer target secret.

Three sentences later he gives a possible reason as to why iSoc might not reveal the jailed target.

On the other hand, whoever was blocked has a higher probability of being townie since the night kill went through without being blocked. There's some logic that the scum will want to kill off known townies and thus the jailer target has a higher probability of being killed, but if nobody knows the jailer target then we're no better or worse off than when we started.

This is the 3rd red flag.

He says this too:

If someone comes forth before iSocialism gives the target and says they were blocked, then iSocialism can say that he did it and nothing is proven.

Well I came forth before iSocialism did.  I was jailed.  How in the world does that mean that iSocialism can say that he did it?  That would mean that the real jailer would instantly pick up on him being scum.  Also, if you're going to try and weasel out of that by saying there may be two jailers, you'd first have to try and come up with the name of the second jailer character and if you think Walt is the second jailer then explain why there's a miller role in play.  4th red flag.

This gave me a chuckle:

Regarding Iron Helix's gauntlet challenge, I decline. He's active and scum-hunting and that's good.

Zacch, meanwhile, is doing nothing for the town and could just as easily be scum.

I at least agree that you're easily scum.

I did not use my kill last night so there is probably a serial killer or two scum factions in the game.

I've already explained why there would be a SK and why there would be 1 mafia faction.  This is a themed game.  The characters are available to you to check. You should know that Greg Stillson and his supporters should be the main faction, since he was, I repeat, he was the main antagonist through the whole 6 seasons that the show ran.  Who would comprise the second faction?  There isn't anyone even close to being good enough to make a second faction.  Of course we have to take your word that you didn't kill. Another red flag.

Summation: One or two of these red flags probably wouldn't be enough to lynch on their own, however putting it all together, I feel safe enough to do this.  My offer on gladitorial 1x1 still stands.  If KevinH comes up as town on a lynch, I'll self-vote next day. That whole last post of Kevin's is just pure gravy to me.
